How Far Will You Go?

Yesterday I had the privilege of meeting Pastor Lee.  He spoke in broken English and some Korean.  I was accompanied by the Student Pastor of the church I serve who is also Korean and he helped translate when Pastor Lee switched from English to Korean.  We met with Pastor Lee because he has a weekly church service with people who are experiencing homelessness in Uptown, a neighborhood near mine in Chicago.  Every week he has between 50 and 100 people coming for church.  In his broken English, he leads worship and preaches very long sermons.  When I first heard about him, I had so many questions I just had to meet with him.  We met at McDonald’s and as he patiently responded to my questions, he told me part of his story.  What an amazing story!

Pastor Lee is ordained in the Methodist Church of Korea.  He served as a Chaplain in the Korean army for more than 10 years and served as a Parish Pastor for the rest of his professional life.  His wife decided more than 20 years ago to move to Chicago to be with her mother and sister.  Pastor Lee did not want to move so he stayed in Korea.  More than 10 years ago, his wife (through some tricks, according to Pastor Lee!) managed to get him to move to Chicago.  When he arrived in Chicago he was angry with his wife for tricking him and he prayed to God for purpose.  Pastor Lee says that God told him to go and be a minister to people experiencing homelessness.  His wife was not comfortable with him doing that so he decided to follow God instead of listening to his wife.

Pastor Lee left the high-rise he was living in with his wife and moved into a homeless shelter for men in Uptown.  He lived in the shelter for one year.  He talked about how scared he was initially because many of the men in the shelter had spent time in jail.  He described some of the men and their tattoos and he said he prayed to God for help and God told him to love the men around him.  So he did.  Pastor Lee said he became friends with many of the men.  Eventually he was able to qualify for a senior living apartment and he moved out and then began inviting all of his friends to a Korean church several miles away.  Each Sunday he would drive the church van, pick them all up and take them to church and then return them to Uptown afterward.  He realized it was too much and the van wasn’t reliable enough so he asked some churches for space and was denied.  The Inspiration Cafe decided to let him use their space on Sunday mornings for 2 hours.  He leads the church service and loves the people.  After church he gives those who come either food or food cards so they can eat.  Pastor Lee lives on his retirement income from Korea and he lives very simply so he can afford to give food every Sunday.

When I asked him what he does all during the week he said he prays.  Sometimes he prays 7, 8 or 10 hours each day.  Pastor Lee told me you cannot do anything without prayer.  Indeed.  Pastor Lee said he prays so he can follow Jesus as far as Jesus wants him to.

Last Sunday he had 100 people in church!  He said that God promised all along if Pastor Lee would follow Jesus, God would bring the people.  In my lifetime I have heard many people’s stories.  Even though I may have different ideas of God or different ways of hearing God or different ways of talking about God, I have always been inspired by people who are really willing to give up everything to follow.

During this election season, may we be reminded that there are examples all around us of people who are tremendous leaders.  Tremendous leaders are humble – they have an accurate sense of themselves.  They don’t think too highly or too little of themselves.  When you start from that place, you can truly love others.  Thank you, Pastor Lee, for being an inspiration to the rest of us about putting your money where your mouth is…

What I Forgot To Say

When I preach, I preach without a manuscript so that I can connect with people.  What does that mean?  It means I write out the whole sermon and then I try to absorb and ingest it and then I leave it behind when I preach.  I have chosen to do it that way so I can look people in the eyes and have it feel more like a conversation because I can see how they react and respond.  The downside to preaching that way is that sometimes I have written something into the sermon that I end up forgetting to say in the moment!

Yesterday I preached from Luke 3:1-22 and I raised the question of whether John the Baptist really knew Jesus since the Jesus he portrayed in Luke 3 was not exactly the Jesus of the gospels we have come to know.  John describes Jesus as a kind of Harry Potter sorting hat who is going to sort people into good and bad, worthy and unworthy.  John’s language and imagery is way more scary than J.K. Rowling’s, though.  It’s one thing to end up in Slytherin, it’s quite another to be thrown into the unquenchable fire.  As I often do, I questioned the theology in the text and I even made a statement that I knew would raise some eyebrows about how God is less concerned about our individual salvation than about our collective salvation.  Okay, maybe I also questioned the notion of salvation and what we have been taught about it versus what it can be when we approach it from a community standpoint.  It’s also possible I undid a few threads related to original sin and suggested original goodness might be a better way for us to form identity.

But the one thing I forgot to say anything about was repentance!  John the Baptist preached about repentance for the forgiveness of sin.  It’s true I don’t love the theological words that imply we are anything less than Beloved.  It’s also true I don’t love the theological words that are hard to access for people outside of the church.  Honestly?  The word repentance is just loaded.  I believe part of my job as a preacher and pastor is to reframe some of the words that have been used as bully words.  Repentance is one of those words.  When someone else suggests you should repent, they are telling you in some way that you are not enough, that you are missing the mark, that you are not okay, that you should feel a particular way (regret, remorse, contrition).  The word repentance is deeply connected to individual salvation in that repentance (asking for forgiveness and expressing sorrow or guilt) is necessary in order to be saved.  If you believe in original sin, the idea that sin is in our very being, then the idea of repentance makes sense as you become conscious of and able to identify all of the ways that sin might manifest itself.

What if you don’t subscribe to original sin, but instead believe original goodness, the idea that we were each created in the image of God and that we each have that of God in us?  What if you believe you are fundamentally good and that everyday is an invitation to live into God’s image in you?  What part, then, would repentance play if any?  I like the image of repentance as a turning away from and a turning toward (the greek concept of metanoia).  When I think of what I might want to turn away from and turn toward, I think of turning away from overwhelm and anxiety and toward mindfulness and priorities.  I think of turning away from fear and toward honesty and integrity.  I think of turning away from shame and toward loving acceptance.  I think of turning away from hopelessness or apathy and toward hope and community action.  In other words, I understand how important it is to change the way we think, the way we move in the world, the way we behave sometimes.  Whether or not we are able to turn ourselves around has a real impact on the communities in which we live – our families, our churches, our cities, our chosen families.  I still don’t love the word repentance and I rarely use it.  In the right context, though, with reclaiming some images, I like to think my intention is to live it.  How about you?  What do you want to do turn from and then turn toward?  How would you like to change your direction in order to live into God’s image in you?

Resistance and Relationship

Two things I know about Jesus of Nazareth, the one people call Messiah or Savior or Son of God, or Rabbi, or the Christ.  The two things I know about him actually go together.  Regardless of what right-wing Christians or prosperity gospel Christians say about Jesus, when the rag tag group of men, women and children followed Jesus, they learned all about resistance and relationship because that’s how Jesus rolled.  Jesus modeled relationship with God and Jesus led them in time apart from the crowds, time devoted to prayer and contemplation and relationship with each other and themselves.  But relationship always led to resistance.  They resisted the religious authorities (who were either in the palm of the political forces or were so concerned with the legalistic parts of the religion that they couldn’t see or care for people), they resisted the established religion (for the same reasons), they resisted the political authorities who were the occupying force of the time, and they resisted the cultural voices that would have tamed their actions.  The bottom line is that Jesus was 100% for the poor, the oppressed, the imprisoned, the forgotten.  Jesus resisted those who didn’t care about his people.

Jesus led the resistance of the first century and he did it by forming relationships among and across groups that would have previously had nothing to do with one another.  When Jesus told Simon Peter to let down his nets into the deep water in Luke 5, Jesus was saying something far more reaching than fish.  Jesus was telling us, today, that we have to choose between the shallow and the deep waters.  The shallow waters are safe and sometimes even familiar.  The deep waters are risky, unknown, and potentially deadly.  Choosing deep waters is what Debby Irving, author of “Waking Up White”, would call “Engaging.”  She writes, “Prepare yourself to adopt an “I don’t know what I don’t know”attitude.  The sooner you can become comfortable seeking what you don’t know, as opposed to proving what you do, the more you will learn and the more effective you will become as a racial justice advocate.” (p. 252)  We can insert any number of injustices into that space as we seek justice on a variety of fronts.  The point is that going deep means living in a space of discomfort as we seek to learn about what we don’t know.

May we have the courage to choose the deep waters in the living of these days.  May we have the wisdom to root ourselves in contemplation.  May we follow Jesus as we develop relationship at every level and then work together in resistance.  Jesus didn’t resist just to resist.  Jesus led the resistance because people’s lives were at stake.
